My Reading Process

My goal since 2016 has been to read or listen to 100 books every year.

Why 100?

It seemed like a number that was attainable, but challenging. Do I retain all this information? Hell no. But I love this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson “I cannot remember the books I've read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me.” Some books were grueling to get through (I finish books I don’t like because I want to know WHY I don’t like them, and if I ever write a book I want to be sure to not do THAT, whatever that is). Some were great one-time reads, and some I will read again and again.

People always ask ‘where the you do you find the time!?!?

  1. I’ve made learning a priority in my life. Books are someone else’s 30 years of experience and life's work. Anything you want to learn about, or any problem you’re having, has already been written about.

  2. During the week (pre-COVID) I averaged 3 hours a day in the car, listening on average to two audiobooks a week just in the car. During COVID, I have been doing all my workouts, house chores, walks, and recovery sessions while listening to books.

  3. I flew over 80k miles in 2018 & 2019. I read a lot of my paperback books on flights. I also read 20 minutes before bed and upon waking most days.

  4. I choose to read books and fitness articles over watching TV and movies [with the exception of a few Patriots games]. This is for no other reason than I simply enjoy reading.

P.S. I don’t think that reading is the only way to learn or to become a leader. I also don’t believe that if you don’t read you’re a loser or I’m better than you. I think the best way to learn is whatever information you’re willing to consume and can grasp and implement. Videos, courses, movies, writing, networking, DOING... I actually learn best from taking courses then applying them but currently my teaching schedule, family life and COVID mean a different kind of learning for me this year. Reading and writing are the second best way I learn so they have become my main source of taking in information. We all learn on different schedules using different mediums.
